A short temper will only elongate the time period it takes to train your dog. Positive reinforcement and healthy, dog treats are the best tools to use when training your Great Dane.

When training your Great Dane, place him in an environment in which you have removed most distractions, including other pets. Train the dog on one command at a time so as not to confuse the dog and after the dog knows its name the next command will be a return command such as “return”, “come”, or “here”. When the dog completes the task successfully, reward with an edible treat and praise.

Socialization – Because of their size and development rate, it is crucial that you socialize your Great Dane earlier than with other breeds. Socialization should start at 2-3 months of age and continue until adulthood.
Positive Reinforcement and Clicker Training – Postive reinforcement training techniques such as clicker training often work best with this large breed. Dogs should never be physically punished or abused, and a Great Dane should be especially handled with care because of their size.

Sensitivity – Despite their size, Great Dane are actually fairly sensitive. They enjoy pleasing their owners and can become upset and anxious if they feel they’re failed to do so. Keep things positive and upbeat and never yell at your pooch. Yelling, (as well as physical punishment) can cause emotional as well as behavioral issues and can damage your relationship with your pet.
Along with the basics for training Great Danes, you will also need to potty train your pooch. If your new pet is still a puppy, basic potty training techniquesshould suffice. If you have brought an adult Great Dane into your family, you will still need to do a potty training refresher course with them. Any time a dog is moved into a new environment, they will need to be taught where they can, (and where they can’t) go potty. Older dogs should catch on quickly and puppies are generally potty trained in a week or so.
